Free tools for students and researchers

Exact counts, conversions and list tools for coursework and research.

19 tools Free to use 25 languages

Coursework and research are full of rules you can't round off: a 250-word abstract limit, a reference list that must be alphabetical, a binary number you have to show in decimal, a sample you need to pick at random rather than by hand.

Those rules are exactly where chatbots slip. They often miscount words, and they can't show that a selection was really random. These tools count, convert and shuffle with fixed code, so you can rerun them and check the result.

All of them are free and available in 25 languages. You can use them without an account, and a free account raises the daily limit.

Common questions

Will the word count match Word or Google Docs?

Usually, because all three count words separated by spaces. Hyphenated words, numbers with dashes and stray symbols can shift the total by a word or two, so leave a small margin when you are right at a limit.

Is the list randomizer good enough for picking a sample?

It uses a standard pseudo-random shuffle, which is fine for classroom draws, group assignments and informal sampling. For a published study, document your method and select the sample in your statistics software using a fixed random seed, so others can reproduce it.
