See the ASCII code behind every character

ASCII (American Standard Code for Information Interchange) is the 1960s standard that gave each English letter, digit and common symbol a number from 0 to 127. Capital A is 65, lowercase a is 97, the digit 0 is 48 and a space is 32. Modern Unicode and UTF-8 keep those same numbers for the first 128 characters, so ASCII codes are still everywhere.

Choose To ascii to turn text into its character codes, or To text to turn a list of codes back into characters.

It's useful for programming, data cleaning, understanding encodings, and spotting invisible characters that cause bugs.

How to use the ascii converter

  1. Paste your text or the ASCII codes.
  2. Choose To ascii or To text.
  3. Submit to convert.
  4. Copy the result.

Examples

Text to codes

Input: Hi!

Output: 72 105 33

Codes to text

Input: 77 121 32 66 111 116 115 121

Output: My Botsy

32 is the space.

A space between letters

Input: a b

Output: 97 32 98

Spaces are converted like any other character, which makes hidden double spaces easy to spot.

Beyond ASCII

Input: é

Output: 195 169

é isn't ASCII, so you see its two UTF-8 bytes instead of one code.

Common uses

  • Looking up the code of a character for programming.
  • Finding hidden characters like tabs (9), line feeds (10) or carriage returns (13).
  • Learning how text encoding works.
  • Building puzzles and coded messages.
  • Checking data that will be sent to older systems.
  • Checking whether text contains hidden characters such as tabs (9) or carriage returns (13).

Tips and things to know

  • Upper- and lowercase letters are exactly 32 apart (A = 65, a = 97), which is why case conversion is simple for computers.
  • Characters above 127, such as é or emoji, aren't ASCII. They're Unicode and use multiple bytes in UTF-8.
  • For other formats, try the binary converter, hex converter or HTML entity converter.

Edge cases and limitations

  • When decoding, separate codes with spaces. 72,105 isn't split at the comma: only the 72 is read, so you get just H.
  • Numbers above 255 wrap around and produce unexpected characters.
  • The output ends with a trailing space after the last code; most apps ignore it, but trim it if you paste into code.
  • Control codes such as 0–31 decode to invisible characters that may not show up when you copy the result.

Frequently asked questions

What is the ASCII code for A?

65 for uppercase A and 97 for lowercase a.

How many ASCII characters are there?

Standard ASCII defines 128 characters (0–127), including 33 control characters and 95 printable ones.

Is ASCII the same as Unicode?

Unicode includes ASCII as its first 128 characters, then adds over a hundred thousand more for other languages and symbols.

What is extended ASCII?

Various 8-bit character sets (128–255) added accented letters and symbols, but they differ between systems. Today UTF-8 is used instead.
