See where an IP address is located

Every device on the internet talks through an IP address, such as 8.8.8.8 (IPv4) or 2001:4860:4860::8888 (IPv6). IP addresses are handed out in blocks to internet providers, companies and hosting networks, and those blocks are registered to regions. An IP lookup uses a geolocation database to estimate where an address is in use and shows details such as the country, city, time zone, latitude and longitude.

Enter an address to see its details. It's handy for checking where a suspicious login came from, reading server logs, confirming that a VPN is working, or troubleshooting why a website shows you content meant for another country.

Keep in mind that IP geolocation is approximate. It usually identifies the right country and often the right region, but the city can be off, sometimes by a long way, because the location reflects where the provider registers or routes that block, not a street address. An IP address alone does not reveal who a person is or where they live.

How to use the ip lookup

  1. Type or paste the IPv4 or IPv6 address you want to check.
  2. Submit the lookup.
  3. Review the results: country, city or region, time zone, and the latitude and longitude of the estimated location.
  4. If you need the network owner or the domain behind the address, follow up with a reverse IP or Whois lookup.

Common uses

  • Checking the origin of a login alert or an unusual entry in your account activity.
  • Investigating traffic in web server, firewall or analytics logs.
  • Confirming that your VPN or proxy shows the location you expect.
  • Debugging geo-targeted content, pricing or redirects on your own website.
  • Spotting spam sign-ups or fraud patterns that come from the same area.

Tips and things to know

  • Mobile networks and large providers often route traffic through a central hub, so a phone may appear to be in a different city.
  • VPNs, proxies, Tor and corporate networks show the location of their exit server, not the user.
  • Private ranges such as 192.168.x.x, 10.x.x.x and 172.16–31.x.x only exist inside local networks and can't be geolocated.
  • To see which websites share a server with an IP, use the reverse IP lookup. To find out who hosts a domain, try the website hosting checker.

Frequently asked questions

How accurate is IP geolocation?

It's generally reliable at the country level and reasonably good at the region level. City-level results are an estimate and can be wrong, especially for mobile networks, VPNs and corporate connections.

Can someone find my home address from my IP?

Not from a public lookup. Geolocation databases only show an approximate area. Only your internet provider can link an IP to a customer account, and they typically release that only to law enforcement with legal process.

What's the difference between IPv4 and IPv6?

IPv4 addresses are four numbers separated by dots (like 203.0.113.5) and there are about 4.3 billion of them. IPv6 addresses are longer, written in hexadecimal with colons, and the pool is vast. Both can be looked up here.

Why does my IP show the wrong city?

Your provider may register its address blocks to a regional office or route traffic through a hub in another city. Using a VPN will also show the VPN server's location.

How do I find my own IP address?

Your public IP is the one websites see. Many routers show it in their admin page, and searching "what is my IP" in a search engine displays it.
