Mailto link generator

Create mailto links with a prefilled recipient, subject, body, CC and BCC, plus the HTML code for your website or email signature. Free generator.

Build email links that open a ready-to-send message

A mailto link opens the visitor's email app with a new message already addressed, and optionally with a subject, body text, CC and BCC filled in. It's the simplest way to add a "Contact us", "Request a quote" or "Report a problem" link to a website, PDF or email signature.

Fill in the to email, subject, body content, CC and BCC fields, and the generator creates the link. Spaces, line breaks and special characters in the subject and body are encoded for you, which is where hand-written mailto links usually break.

Example: mailto:hi@example.com?subject=Quote%20request&body=Hi%2C%20I'd%20like%20a%20quote.

How to use the mailto link generator

  1. Enter the recipient email address.
  2. Add a subject and body text if you want them prefilled.
  3. Add CC and BCC addresses if needed.
  4. Click outside the field you edited last; the link updates, and you can copy it into an <a href="..."> tag.

Examples

Subject and body

Input:

To: hi@example.com
Subject: Quote request
Body: Hi,
I'd like a quote

Output:

mailto:hi@example.com?subject=Quote%20request&body=Hi%2C%0AI'd%20like%20a%20quote

The comma becomes %2C, the line break %0A and spaces %20. The apostrophe is allowed in URLs, so it stays as it is.

With CC

Input:

To: sales@example.com
CC: manager@example.com
Subject: New order

Output: mailto:sales@example.com?cc=manager@example.com&subject=New%20order

Using it on a page

Output:

<a href="mailto:hi@example.com?subject=Quote%20request">Request a quote</a>

The generator gives you the link; wrap it in an a tag like this yourself.

Common uses

  • Contact links on websites and landing pages.
  • Feedback or bug-report links with a template in the body.
  • Quote request buttons that tell you exactly what the customer needs.
  • Links in PDFs, newsletters and email signatures.
  • Internal links that send a request to a team mailbox with CC.

Tips and things to know

  • Mailto only works if the visitor has an email app set up. Show the email address as text too, for people on shared or web-only setups.
  • Publishing an email address in a link can attract spam bots. Consider a contact form for high-traffic pages.
  • Keep the body short; very long mailto links can be cut off by some email apps.
  • Encode values yourself with the URL encoder, or make chat links with the WhatsApp link generator.

Edge cases and limitations

  • CC and BCC are added exactly as typed, without encoding. Separate several addresses with commas and no spaces, and avoid characters like & in them.
  • Spaces at the start and end of the subject and body are trimmed.
  • The To field can be left empty: mailto:?subject=... opens a new message where the visitor chooses the recipient, handy for "share by email" links.
  • The link updates when a field loses focus, so click outside the last field before copying.

Frequently asked questions

What is a mailto link?

A link starting with mailto: that opens a new email in the visitor's default email app.

Can I add a subject and body to a mailto link?

Yes, with ?subject= and &body= parameters. The generator encodes them properly.

How do I add multiple recipients?

Separate addresses with commas in the To, CC or BCC fields.

How do I add a line break in the body?

Line breaks are encoded as %0A. Type them normally in the body field and the generator handles the encoding.

Why doesn't my mailto link work?

The visitor may not have a default email app configured, or the link contains unencoded special characters.
