See the meta tags search engines and social apps read
Meta tags live in a page's HTML <head> and tell search engines and social networks what the page is about. The title and meta description often become the headline and snippet in Google results. Open Graph and Twitter card tags control the preview image and text when a link is shared on Facebook, LinkedIn, X, Slack or WhatsApp. The robots and canonical tags guide indexing.
Enter a URL and this checker fetches the page and lists its meta tags, so you can confirm they exist, read what they say, and spot problems like a missing description, a duplicate title or an accidental noindex.
It's a quick audit tool for your own pages and a handy way to study how competitors present theirs.
How to use the meta tags checker
- Enter the full URL of the page.
- Submit the check.
- Review the title, description, robots, canonical, Open Graph and Twitter tags.

Common uses
- Auditing pages before and after a site launch or redesign.
- Making sure every page has a unique, descriptive title and description.
- Fixing broken or missing link previews on social media.
- Finding a stray
noindexthat's keeping a page out of Google. - Seeing how competitors write titles and descriptions for the same topic.
Tips and things to know
- Keep titles to roughly 50–60 characters and descriptions to about 120–155, with the main keyword near the start. Measure them with the character counter.
- Write a unique description for every page. Google may rewrite descriptions, but a good one improves click-through.
- Open Graph images work best at 1200×630 pixels.
- The meta keywords tag is ignored by Google, so don't spend time on it.
- Robots instructions can also be sent as HTTP headers; check those with the HTTP headers lookup.
Edge cases and limitations
- The page title (
<title>) and canonical link aren't meta tags, so they aren't listed. View the page source to check them. - Tags added later by JavaScript, common on single-page apps, aren't seen. Search engines that render JavaScript may still see them.
- If a tag appears twice, only one value may be shown. Duplicate descriptions are worth fixing anyway.
- Pages that block bots or require login show the tags of the error or login page instead.
Frequently asked questions
Which meta tags matter most for SEO?
The title tag and meta description (for search snippets), robots (for indexing), canonical (for duplicate content) and viewport (for mobile).
Why does Google show a different description than mine?
Google sometimes generates its own snippet from the page content if it thinks that better matches the search. A clear, relevant description makes this less likely.
What are Open Graph tags?
They're meta tags like og:title, og:description and og:image that social platforms use to build link previews.
Do meta keywords still help?
No. Google has ignored the meta keywords tag for ranking for many years.
