Read a QR code without a phone

QR codes are everywhere: restaurant menus, flyers, invoices, Wi-Fi details, event tickets and parking meters. Usually you scan them with a phone camera, but that's awkward when the code is already on your computer as a screenshot, a PDF export or an image in an email. This QR code reader lets you upload the image and shows the data stored inside it.

A QR code can hold a website link, plain text, a phone number, an email, Wi-Fi network details or a contact card. The reader decodes the pattern and shows the raw data so you can copy it.

It's also a safety check. Scammers stick fake QR codes on parking meters and send them in phishing emails (sometimes called "quishing"). Reading the code first lets you see exactly where a link leads before you open it.

How to use the qr code reader

  1. Take a screenshot or save the image that contains the QR code.
  2. Upload the image to the reader.
  3. Wait a moment while it decodes the code.
  4. Read or copy the data. If it's a link, check the domain carefully before visiting it.

Common uses

  • Reading a QR code from a screenshot, PDF or email on your desktop.
  • Checking where a QR code in a suspicious email or letter really points.
  • Getting the text from a Wi-Fi QR code so you can type the password on a laptop.
  • Testing QR codes you've printed on packaging, flyers or business cards before they go out.
  • Extracting the URL from a QR code to share it as a normal link.

Tips and things to know

  • Crop the image so the QR code is large and clear. Blurry, tiny or heavily compressed images are harder to read.
  • Keep the quiet zone (the blank border around the code) in the image. Cropping into the code itself can stop it from decoding.
  • If a link uses a URL shortener, expand it with the URL redirect checker to see the final destination. If you don't recognize the domain, don't open the link.
  • Barcodes on products are not QR codes; this tool is for QR codes specifically.

Frequently asked questions

Can I scan a QR code on my computer screen?

Yes. Take a screenshot of the code, then upload the screenshot here to read it.

Why won't my QR code scan?

The image may be too small, blurry, low-contrast, partly cut off, or missing its blank border. Try a sharper, larger image.

Is it safe to scan QR codes?

Reading the code is harmless; the risk is visiting a malicious link. Always check the domain before opening it, especially for codes in unexpected emails or stuck on public signs.

What kind of data can a QR code store?

Links, plain text, phone numbers, SMS and email templates, Wi-Fi credentials, contact cards (vCard), calendar events and more.

Does the reader work with photos taken on a phone?

Yes, as long as the QR code is in focus and reasonably straight-on. Crop out the background for best results.
