Slug generator
Turn any title into a clean, lowercase, hyphenated URL slug for blog posts, products and pages. Strips symbols and punctuation. Free slug generator.
Make short, readable URLs from any title
A slug is the part of a URL that identifies a page in plain words, such as how-to-check-dns-records in mybotsy.com/blog/how-to-check-dns-records. Good slugs are short, lowercase, use hyphens between words, and leave out characters that need encoding.
Paste a title and the slug generator converts it: it lowercases the text and replaces every run of spaces, punctuation and symbols with a single hyphen. Letters from any alphabet are kept, accents included, so "10 Café Ideas for Sunday!" becomes 10-café-ideas-for-sunday.
Clean slugs are easier for people to read, share and remember, and they give search engines a clear hint about what the page covers.
How to use the slug generator
- Paste the title or text.
- Submit to generate the slug.
- Shorten it further if needed, keeping the main keyword.
- Copy the slug into your CMS, store or code.
Examples
A blog title
Input: 10 Café Ideas for Sunday!
Output: 10-café-ideas-for-sunday
Accents are kept and the ! is dropped.
Apostrophes and question marks
Input: What's New in 2026?
Output: what-s-new-in-2026
The apostrophe becomes a hyphen. Edit it to whats-new-in-2026 if you prefer.
Underscores
Input: user_profile settings
Output: user-profile-settings
Symbols
Input: C++ vs. C#
Output: c-vs-c
Symbols vanish, so both languages look the same. Spell them out (cpp-vs-csharp) for a useful slug.
Other alphabets
Input: Ünïcödé Ελληνικά
Output: ünïcödé-ελληνικά
Greek, Cyrillic and other scripts are kept.
Common uses
- Creating slugs for blog posts and articles.
- Naming product and category URLs in online stores.
- Generating file names and IDs without spaces or special characters.
- Building anchor IDs for headings.
- Standardizing URLs during a site migration.
Tips and things to know
- Keep slugs short and focused: 3 to 5 meaningful words is plenty. You can drop filler words like "a", "the" and "and".
- Don't change slugs of published pages unless you add a 301 redirect; check it with the URL redirect checker.
- Avoid dates in slugs for content you plan to update.
- For code naming conventions (snake_case, camelCase), use the case converter.
Edge cases and limitations
- Accented and non-Latin letters stay in the slug. Browsers display them fine, but they're percent-encoded when copied (café becomes caf%C3%A9). Replace them by hand if you want plain ASCII URLs.
- Very long titles produce long slugs; trim them to the key words yourself.
Frequently asked questions
What is a URL slug?
The readable part of a URL after the domain that identifies a specific page, like /blog/my-post-title.
Should slugs use hyphens or underscores?
Hyphens. Google recommends hyphens to separate words in URLs, since underscores can join words together.
Do slugs help SEO?
They're a small factor. Clear, descriptive slugs help users and search engines understand a page, and can improve click-through.
Should I include stop words in a slug?
Usually not. Remove them unless they're needed for the slug to make sense.
Can I use the slug for file names?
Yes. Slugs avoid spaces and most symbols, which makes them safe file names on any system. If the file will be shared widely, remove accents too.
