Hear your text read out loud
Text to speech (TTS) turns written words into spoken audio. Paste your text, choose a language, and the tool produces audio you can play in your browser. It uses Google's translation speech engine, which supports a long list of languages and accents, from English and Spanish to Arabic, Hindi, Japanese and Swahili.
Listening is a surprisingly good way to proofread: your ears catch repeated words, clumsy sentences and missing words that your eyes skip over. It's also helpful for language learners checking pronunciation, people who prefer to listen rather than read, and anyone with dyslexia or visual fatigue.
Pick the language that matches the text. Reading Spanish text with an English voice sounds odd, because each voice follows its own language's pronunciation rules.
How to use the text to speech
- Paste or type your text.
- Choose the language code that matches your text, such as English, Spanish or French.
- Submit to generate the audio.
- Press play to listen.
Examples
A short announcement
Input:
Text: The store opens at 9 a.m. tomorrow.
Language: en – English
You get an audio player with the spoken sentence and can download it as an MP3.
Checking pronunciation
Input:
Text: Buenos Aires
Language: es – Spanish
Choose the language of the words, not your own. The same text read with the English voice sounds very different.
Numbers and dates
Input: Text: 3/4
Output: Read as a date or fraction depending on the language
Write numbers out (three quarters) when the exact reading matters.
Common uses
- Proofreading emails, essays and articles by listening to them.
- Hearing how a word or phrase is pronounced in another language.
- Listening to text while doing something else.
- Supporting readers with dyslexia, low vision or reading fatigue.
- Making quick voice prompts or drafts for videos and presentations.
Tips and things to know
- Shorter passages generate faster and sound smoother. Split long documents into sections.
- Punctuation shapes the rhythm: commas create short pauses and periods create longer ones. Add them if the speech sounds rushed.
- Write out abbreviations, symbols and unusual names the way they should be said if the voice gets them wrong.
- Check the length of a script first with the character counter, and clean up pasted text with the emojis remover so the voice doesn't read emoji descriptions.
Edge cases and limitations
- Each request is limited to 200 characters. For longer text, split it at sentence breaks and convert each part.
- Symbols such as & may be read out literally or skipped. Replace them with words (and) for a natural result.
- There's no voice, speed or pitch setting; each language has a single voice.
- Emoji and abbreviations are read inconsistently, so spell out what you want to hear.
Frequently asked questions
Which languages are supported?
Dozens, including English, Spanish, Portuguese, French, German, Italian, Hindi, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Korean, Russian, Turkish and many more. Choose the language from the list.
Is the text to speech free?
Yes. There's no account or payment needed.
Can I change the voice or speed?
The tool uses the standard voice for each language. Choose a different language variant if one is offered for a different accent.
Why does the voice mispronounce some words?
Speech engines follow general pronunciation rules and can struggle with names, abbreviations and mixed-language text. Try spelling the word the way it sounds.
Is text to speech good for proofreading?
Yes. Hearing text read aloud makes mistakes like repeated or missing words much easier to notice.
