Gravatar checker
Enter an email address to see its Gravatar, the profile image shown on WordPress, GitHub and many other sites. Check your avatar for free.
See the avatar tied to an email address
Gravatar (short for Globally Recognized Avatar) is a free service run by Automattic, the company behind WordPress.com. You upload a picture once, link it to your email address, and sites that support Gravatar, including WordPress blogs, many forums and developer tools, show that picture next to your comments and posts automatically.
Enter an email address and this checker shows the Gravatar image associated with it, so you can see how you appear across the web or confirm that a newly uploaded image is live.
Gravatar finds your image using a hash of your email address rather than the address itself. Sites that use it don't need to show your email to display your avatar.
How to use the gravatar checker
- Enter the email address.
- Submit to look up the Gravatar.
- Click Open to view the image at full size.
- If you see a default image, that address has no Gravatar yet. Create one at gravatar.com.
Examples
Messy capitalization and spaces
Input: ' Someone@Example.com '
Output:
https://www.gravatar.com/avatar/16d113840f999444259f73bac9ab8b10?s=2056&d=mp&r=g
The email is trimmed and lowercased before hashing, so any capitalization gives the same image. The tool shows one link per default style (mp, identicon, monsterid, wavatar, retro, robohash, blank).
An email with no Gravatar
Input: Any address never registered on Gravatar
Each preview shows its fallback image, so you can see what visitors will see on sites that use that style.
Common uses
- Checking what avatar appears next to your blog comments.
- Confirming a new Gravatar has updated.
- Making sure a business email shows a professional logo instead of a default icon.
- Checking the avatars of team accounts on WordPress sites.
Tips and things to know
- Use a square image of at least 512×512 pixels so it looks sharp everywhere.
- Gravatar images have ratings (G, PG, R, X). Many sites only show G-rated avatars.
- You can link several email addresses to one Gravatar account and give each a different image.
- Compress your image first with the image optimizer. Pick brand colors with the color picker.
Edge cases and limitations
- Images are shown at a large size (s=2056). Change the s value in the link for smaller versions, such as s=80.
- The rating is set to g, so avatars rated PG or above show the default instead.
- The hash isn't encryption. Anyone who guesses the address can match it, which is worth knowing for privacy.
Frequently asked questions
What is a Gravatar?
It's a profile picture linked to your email address that appears automatically on websites that support the Gravatar service.
Why do I see a default image?
That email address doesn't have a Gravatar yet, or the image's rating is above what the site allows.
How do I change my Gravatar?
Sign in at gravatar.com with your email, upload a new image and assign it to the address. Changes can take a little while to show everywhere due to caching.
Does Gravatar reveal my email address?
It uses a hash of the address, not the address itself. Note that hashes of common emails can sometimes be matched, so treat it as low-level privacy.
