How to Download a YouTube Thumbnail in HD (Free)

By • 31 October, 2026 • SEO & Marketing • 11 minutes read

Save any YouTube thumbnail in every size up to 1280x720. Real tests, why HD is sometimes a grey box, how to handle Shorts links, and fair reuse.

To download a YouTube thumbnail, copy the video's link, paste it into our free YouTube thumbnail downloader and pick a size: the largest is HD, 1280×720. Every thumbnail also sits at a public address you can open yourself: https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg, where VIDEO_ID is the 11 characters after v= in the link. If a size doesn't exist for that video, the downloader tells you (opened directly, that URL shows a small grey box), so use the next size down.

The downloader is free and you don't need an account to use it. Guests get 5 tool uses a day, and a free My Botsy account (100% free, no spam) removes that daily cap. Every result below comes from real runs on October 31, 2026: we pasted the links into the tool, then measured each image file it returned.

The five thumbnail sizes YouTube keeps

YouTube stores each video's thumbnail as several separate files, and the tool shows the same five that the YouTube Data API documents:

  • Default: default.jpg, 120×90 (4:3). Exists for every video.
  • Medium: mqdefault.jpg, 320×180 (16:9). Exists for every video, and it's the only always-available size with no black bars.
  • High: hqdefault.jpg, 480×360 (4:3). Exists for every video.
  • SD: sddefault.jpg, 640×480 (4:3). Exists for most videos.
  • HD: maxresdefault.jpg, 1280×720 (16:9). Only exists when YouTube has a high-resolution source, from an HD upload or a large custom thumbnail.

The two 4:3 sizes have a catch on modern widescreen videos: the 16:9 picture is letterboxed inside the 4:3 frame. We checked the pixels. In the High file for a 16:9 video, rows 45 to 314 hold the picture and the 45 rows above and below are black, so the real image is 480×270. In the SD file, 60 rows at the top and bottom are black, leaving 640×360. If you need a clean 16:9 image, take HD or Medium, or crop the bars off.

How to download a YouTube thumbnail, step by step

  1. Copy the video link. On a computer, copy it from the address bar. In the YouTube app, tap Share, then Copy link. That gives you a youtu.be/…?si=… link, which works as it is.
  2. Open the YouTube thumbnail downloader and paste the link into the URL field.
  3. Click Submit. You get five tabs: Default (120x90), Medium (320x180), High (480x360), SD (640x480) and HD (1280x720).
  4. Open the HD tab first. If it shows the full picture, that's the best file there is. If it says the size isn't available, go to SD, then High.
  5. Save it. The download icon saves the file as maxresdefault.jpg (or the size's name). The open icon shows the image straight from YouTube, and the copy icon copies its URL, which is handy for HTML or a CMS.
  6. Rename the file to something descriptive before you upload it anywhere.

Worked examples (real outputs)

Input: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ&t=43s. The tool ignored &t=43s, read the ID dQw4w9WgXcQ and returned five links, for example https://img.youtube.com/vi/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.jpg. Here is what each file actually was:

SizeHTTP statusPixelsFile size
Default200120×902,888 bytes
Medium200320×18010,303 bytes
High200480×36021,011 bytes
SD200640×48031,029 bytes
HD2001280×72065,324 bytes

The download button returned the same 65,324-byte JPEG with the file name maxresdefault.jpg. A playlist parameter is ignored too: watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ&list=… gives the same ID.

Example 2: an old video with no HD thumbnail

Input: https://youtu.be/jNQXAC9IVRw?si=AbCdEf123, the 2005 upload Me at the zoo. The tool accepted the short link and dropped the si tracking parameter. Default, Medium and High loaded normally (High was 480×360 with no black bars, because the video itself is 4:3). SD and HD didn't exist: both URLs answered HTTP 404 with the same 1,097-byte, 120×90 grey placeholder image.

That placeholder is why a missing size used to look like a tiny grey box in the HD tab. It isn't a slow connection: YouTube has no file at that size. Until October 31, 2026, the HD download button returned an empty (0-byte) file in this case. Now the tool checks each size first: a missing size shows a short "This size isn't available for this video" notice instead of a preview and a download button, so just take the largest tab that shows the real picture.

Input: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/jNQXAC9IVRw and https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ&feature=share. Until October 31, 2026, both returned Invalid YouTube video URL. Since that update the tool accepts Shorts, mobile (m.), live (/live/), YouTube Music and youtube-nocookie links, as well as youtube.com/watch?v=, youtu.be/, youtube.com/embed/ and youtube.com/v/. In our re-test both links loaded their thumbnails straight away. A bare 11-character ID still isn't accepted, so paste the full link.

Many other thumbnail tools still reject Shorts links. The workaround works everywhere, because the video ID never changes: take the 11 characters after /shorts/ or v= and paste https://www.youtube.com/watch?v= plus the ID. For the Shorts link above that's https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jNQXAC9IVRw.

Get a thumbnail without any tool

Since the addresses are predictable, you can build them yourself:

https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/sddefault.jpg
https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/hqdefault.jpg

i.ytimg.com serves the same files. To find the ID in a long link with lots of parameters, paste it into the URL parser and read the v value from the query rows. A few extra details came out of our tests:

  • WebP copies are smaller. https://i.ytimg.com/vi_webp/dQw4w9WgXcQ/maxresdefault.webp was 28,620 bytes, against 65,324 for the JPEG of the same thumbnail. WebP follows the same rule, though: for Me at the zoo, sddefault.webp returned 404.
  • The files 1.jpg, 2.jpg and 3.jpg are 120×90 frames taken automatically from the video, and 0.jpg is 480×360. These are frames from the video, not the creator's chosen thumbnail.
  • There is one larger file that isn't documented. oar2.jpg returned 1920×1080 for the first video and only 320×240 for the 2005 one. YouTube doesn't document it, so don't build anything that depends on it. Our tool doesn't show it.
  • In scripts, check the status code. A missing size still returns an image body (the grey placeholder), so code that ignores the 404 saves the placeholder. With curl, -f makes the request fail instead.

Pitfalls to avoid

  • Expecting full HD. 1280×720 is the largest thumbnail YouTube documents, even when the video itself is 4K and the creator uploaded a bigger image. Scaling it up for a large banner will look soft.
  • Using a 4:3 file as a 16:9 image. High and SD include black bars on widescreen videos. They look fine in a list and wrong in a hero image or slide.
  • Using a cached old thumbnail. When a creator changes the thumbnail, the new image appears at the same URL, but browsers, CDNs and social previews may keep the old one for a while. If you're checking your own change, open the URL in a private window.
  • Treating other creators' thumbnails as free to reuse. A thumbnail is a creative work owned by whoever made it. Using your own, or using one to illustrate a link to that video, is common and low risk. Putting someone else's thumbnail into your own video, ad or product is the kind of reuse that needs permission. This isn't legal advice; if money is involved, ask the creator.
  • Uploading the raw file to your site. A 65 KB JPEG is fine for one image, but a page of embeds adds up. Convert or compress it first (see below).

What creators and marketers use thumbnails for

The common, legitimate reasons are backing up your own thumbnails when the design file is gone, studying what thumbnails in your niche look like before you design one, and using a video's thumbnail as a lightweight preview in a blog post or newsletter that links to the video. If you put a thumbnail on a page as its social preview image, check it with the meta tags checker after publishing; our guide on how to check meta tags explains what to look for.

For your own uploads, YouTube's help page currently recommends a 16:9 image as large as possible (3840×2160 for videos) with a minimum width of 640 pixels, as JPG or PNG, and under 2 MB when uploading from a phone. What you download back is still at most 1280×720, so keep your original design file.

Make the downloaded thumbnail web-ready

Run the file through the image optimizer to convert it to WebP or AVIF and shrink it in your browser; our guide to compressing images for a website covers which format and quality to pick. To match a brand color from the thumbnail, the color picker gives you the exact HEX value. And if you're sharing the video from a particular moment, the YouTube timestamp link generator builds the ?t= link for you. Add UTM parameters if you want to see that traffic in your analytics.

Grab your thumbnail now

Paste a link into the YouTube thumbnail downloader, open the HD tab and save the largest size that shows the real picture. Watch, youtu.be, Shorts and mobile links all work. It's free, and you don't need an account to start.

Frequently asked questions

How do I download a YouTube thumbnail in HD?

Paste the video link into a YouTube thumbnail downloader and open the HD (1280x720) size, or open https://img.youtube.com/vi/VIDEO_ID/maxresdefault.jpg directly. If you see a small grey box, the video has no HD thumbnail and SD (640x480) or High (480x360) is the largest available.

Why is the maxresdefault thumbnail grey or missing?

YouTube only creates maxresdefault.jpg when it has a high-resolution source. For other videos the URL returns HTTP 404 with a 120x90 grey placeholder. In our test, a 2005 video had no SD or HD file, but its High thumbnail loaded fine.

How do I get the thumbnail of a YouTube Short?

Paste the Shorts link into our downloader as it is: it accepts youtube.com/shorts/ links since October 31, 2026. In any other tool, copy the 11-character ID after /shorts/ and use it in a normal watch link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ID. The image URLs are the same for any video ID.

What size is a YouTube thumbnail?

The files YouTube serves are 120x90, 320x180, 480x360, 640x480 and 1280x720. The 480x360 and 640x480 versions are 4:3, so 16:9 videos have black bars at the top and bottom. For uploads, YouTube recommends a 16:9 image at least 640 pixels wide.

Downloading your own thumbnails is fine, and using one to illustrate a link to that video is common practice. The image still belongs to its creator, so reusing someone else's thumbnail in your own content, ads or products needs their permission. This isn't legal advice.

Is the My Botsy YouTube thumbnail downloader free?

Yes. It's free and doesn't need an account. Guests get 5 tool uses a day, and a free My Botsy account, with no spam, removes that daily cap.
