How to Write a Check Amount in Words (With Examples)

Write any check amount in words: cents as a fraction over 100, where and goes, hyphens, big amounts and real converter outputs you can copy. Free tool.

To write a check amount in words, write the dollars in words, then and, then the cents as a fraction over 100. $4,835.50 becomes Four thousand eight hundred thirty-five and 50/100. Start at the far left of the line and draw a line through any space left before the printed word "Dollars".

If you're not sure how a big number is spelled, type it into our free number to words converter and copy the result. It's free, you don't need an account and there's nothing to install. Guests get 5 tool uses a day, and a free My Botsy account (100% free, no spam) removes that daily cap. Every converter output quoted below is real: some came from live runs on mybotsy.com on October 31, 2026, and the rest from the same converter code run directly on our server.

Where the amount goes on a check

A US personal check asks for the amount twice:

  • The box next to the dollar sign, in figures: 4,835.50. Write it tight against the $ so nobody can squeeze a digit in front.
  • The long line under "Pay to the order of", in words: Four thousand eight hundred thirty-five and 50/100. Most checks print "Dollars" at the end of this line, so you don't write it again.

The two must match. If they don't, the words win: the Uniform Commercial Code, which every US state has adopted, says in section 3-114 that when an instrument contains contradictory terms, "words prevail over numbers". That's why the line in words matters more than the box, and why it's the one worth getting exactly right.

How to write a check amount in words, step by step

  1. Write the figures first. In the box, write the amount with cents, for example 4,835.50. Even for a round amount, add .00.
  2. Split dollars from cents. $4,835.50 is 4835 dollars and 50 cents. Only the dollars get spelled out.
  3. Spell the dollars. Type 4835 (digits only, no comma, no $, no cents) into the number to words converter, keep the language on English and click Submit. Our live run returned four thousand eight hundred thirty-five.
  4. Add the cents as a fraction. Write and 50/100. Always use two digits: 5 cents is 05/100, no cents is 00/100.
  5. Write it on the line, starting right at the left edge: Four thousand eight hundred thirty-five and 50/100.
  6. Fill the gap. Draw a straight line from the end of your words to the printed "Dollars", so nothing can be added.
  7. Check that the box and the line match before you sign.

Worked examples with real converter outputs

Each row shows what we typed into the converter, the exact output, and the finished line for the check. Capitalize the first word (or every word) if you like: banks don't require a particular case.

$0.750zeroZero and 75/100

Why $1,050 has no "and" in the middle

The converter writes one thousand fifty, not "one thousand and fifty", and that's the US check convention: "and" stands for the decimal point, so it appears once, right before the cents. "One thousand and fifty" next to "and 00/100" gives the reader two "and"s to puzzle over. British usage puts "and" before the tens (one thousand and fifty pounds), which is fine on a UK cheque but not how US checks are usually written.

Capitalizing every word

Some people prefer Title Case on checks. We ran four thousand eight hundred thirty-five and 50/100 through the case converter with the Capitalized option and got Four Thousand Eight Hundred Thirty-Five and 50/100. Short words like "and", "of" and "the" stay lowercase, which is the usual Title Case rule.

The rules people get wrong

  • Cents in words. Write 50/100, not "fifty cents". The fraction is short and fills the end of the line cleanly.
  • Leaving the cents off a round amount. Write and 00/100 (some people write and no/100). A blank after the dollars is space someone else could use.
  • Missing hyphens. Numbers from twenty-one to ninety-nine take a hyphen: thirty-five, ninety-nine. Round tens don't: twenty, fifty. The converter applies this for you.
  • "Fifteen hundred" instead of "one thousand five hundred". People say it, and it means the same thing, but the converter writes the full form, which is easier to compare against the box.
  • Starting in the middle of the line. A gap on the left lets someone add a word in front, like "Two thousand" in front of "four hundred".
  • Using pencil or erasable ink. Write in permanent pen. If you make a mistake, void the check and write a new one rather than correcting it.

Pitfalls when using the converter

  • Convert the dollars, not the whole amount. The converter also reads decimals and thousands separators (1,234.56 gives "one thousand two hundred thirty-four point fifty-six"), but "point fifty-six" isn't how a check is written. Type the dollars only and write the cents as a fraction yourself.
  • Negative numbers. -40 is accepted and returns "minus forty". That's right for a math lesson, but a check amount is never negative.
  • The language menu. It defaults to English. If you switched it to another language earlier, switch it back or you'll get the number in Spanish or French.
  • Spanish accents. Spanish needs accents on dieciséis, veintidós, veintitrés and veintiséis. The converter now writes them correctly (we fixed this on October 31, 2026: 2026 gives dos mil veintiséis), but check any amount you copy from elsewhere.
  • Proofreading by ear. Fourteen and forty look alike when you're tired. Paste your line into text to speech and listen to it once before you write the check.

Beyond checks: invoices, receipts and contracts

The same habit of writing the amount in figures and in words shows up on rent receipts, promissory notes, invoices and contracts, usually in the form Four thousand eight hundred thirty-five dollars ($4,835.00). Here, write the currency in words too, since nothing is printed after the amount. The converter supports 31 languages, including Spanish, Brazilian Portuguese, French, Belgian French, German and Italian, so it also helps with paperwork in another language. Each language has its own rules, though: French writes quatre-vingts for 80 but quatre-vingt-un for 81, and the converter gets both right.

If you'd rather not deal with paper at all, a PayPal payment link lets someone pay you an exact amount from a link. Before you pay any online invoice, it's worth taking two minutes to check that the website is legit. If you send invoices by email, a mailto link with the subject and body filled in saves your client some typing.

Spell out your amount now

Type the dollar part into the number to words converter, copy the words, add and XX/100, and draw a line to the end. It's free, and you don't need an account to start.

Frequently asked questions

How do I write a check amount with cents in words?

Write the dollars in words, then and, then the cents as a fraction over 100. For example, $236.79 is Two hundred thirty-six and 79/100. The word Dollars is usually printed at the end of the line already.

How do I write a check for a round amount, like $500?

Write Five hundred and 00/100. Adding 00/100 shows there are no cents and leaves no blank space after the dollars. Some people write and no/100 instead, which means the same thing.

What happens if the words and the numbers on a check don't match?

Under Uniform Commercial Code section 3-114, words prevail over numbers, so the amount in words is the one that counts. A bank may still question a check where the two disagree, so make them match before you sign.

Do you write and in one thousand fifty on a check?

No. On US checks, and goes only before the cents: One thousand fifty and 00/100. British usage puts and before the tens (one thousand and fifty), but that's not the US check convention.

How do I write a check for less than a dollar?

Write Zero and 75/100 for $0.75, and write 0.75 in the box. Starting with Zero leaves no space at the front of the line.

Is the My Botsy number to words converter free?

Yes. It's free and doesn't need an account. Guests get 5 tool uses a day, and a free My Botsy account, with no spam, removes that daily cap. It works in English and 30 other languages.
